Squinch Magazine #1

Inside:

Squinch. It's a good word, and one we discover describes an architectural detail; a load-bearing structure, an arch,  joining a dome to a square base. It's a fitting name for this handsome new architecture magazine, through radical criticism, fiction, poetry, long-form essays, interviews and photography, spans various aspects of our built environment.

Issue #1 takes us from suburban 'Mundania' in south London, to the city's hidden waterways, from a new proliferation of 'things in fields' to designing better new town developments (more things in fields). There are boring towns (come friendly bombs...), falling downs (the razing of a Glasgow high-rise), and page after (flat lying) page of thatched roofs, Italian villas, ill-lit institutions, and warehouses along the M1 the size of small towns.

It's very nicely published, behaves nicely in the hands, has fun with its typefaces and layout, and rewards us with lovely colour reproductions. Oh, and it's fascinating, often funny and we're already waiting for issue #2.
