'Becoming the Forest' is an open-ended publication produced by Una Hamilton Helle and Lotte Brown. Subtitled 'Treading the arboreal pathway through the backwoods of black metal', this is a title that looks at how the musical subculture of black metal is aesthetically and philosophically entangled with the Northern hemispheres' topography of dense spruce forests.
'Traversing the subterranean passages of the caverns of black metal' - this is how the long-awaited (and well worth the wait) 5th issue greets us, and inside the contents pull us towards the chthonic. Inside, there are interviews with waste walkers (Wulvur), apocalyptic drone folk artists (Menace Ruine), post punk/black metal artists (Peace Vaults), storytellers of sagas (Oerheks), and dungeon/forest synth artists (Mycologia)
Elsewhere we learn about animist art practices, read the poetry of Lotte Brown, and gaze at the beautiful, imagined standing stones of Tom Sewell.
