Join The Future, Matt Anniss' acclaimed alternative history of UK dance music, returns in an expanded and updated form.
In Join The Future, bleep and bass, or bleep techno, is traced as the first distinctly British form of electronic dance music (pre-dating breakbeat hardcore, jungle, dubstep, and drum & bass, among a stream of others).
Five years of research and hundreds of interviews were undertaken in the writing of this 400+ page social, musical and oral history - it's a story (largely untold) that moves across locations and time from reggae soundsystem clashes in the West Midlands to the birth of breakbeat hardcore and jungle in London in the early '90s (plenty of Yorkshire history here too, including the formation and early days of LFO in Leeds and the founding of Warp Records in Sheffield).
Join The Future sheds light on a distinctly British form of electronic dance music and includes first-hand accounts of the key clubs and raves, biographies of overlooked production pioneers, and stories of far flung bleep outposts that sprung up in the US and Canada.
Re-released to include more interviews, analysis and a brand new afterword that re-appraises some of the accepted narratives and solidified histories that have held sway.
