The latest volume in the Typology Collections is devoted to the camping tent. A common motif in both rural landscapes and urban spaces, the tent is an omnipresent typology whose apparent simplicity is deceptive. Halfway between architecture that we manipulate and furniture that we inhabit, the tent encompasses numerous uses and brings together disparate realities. Reminiscent of primitive huts, descended from military encampments, a shelter for leisure or makeshift purposes, precarious yet resistant, protective yet porous, the tent is used in both controlled and extreme environments. An elementary assembly of high-performance materials, it is designed in the West and produced in Southeast Asia. Even more so than the single-material objects studied in previous issues of Typology, this composite object allows us to become aware of the complex nature of the things that surround us.
Comprising 136 pages, it is published in both French and English. The first part of the book features a collection of 165 photographs of objects reproduced in duotone across 88 pages. The second part includes an introductory text by industrial designer Sina Sohrab and a joint interview with three professionals familiar with the subject and experts on the object: Olivier Sirost, a historian and sociologist specializing in camping; Anna Ferrino, director of the Italian company Ferrino, the oldest tent manufacturer in Europe; and Raphaël Têtedoie, an outdoor equipment designer and tent specialist. This 48-page section is illustrated with a photo report from a Chinese factory, 30 color illustrations, and a photographic series by Anaick Lejart and Marine Armandin.
