Here we are now, entertain us.

With an emphasis on 1990-1995, Greg Pato's 'Alternative for the Masses' takes a plaid-covered look at the alt-rock explosion that made household names of bands and acts that had previously dwelt in the margins. From Nine inch nails and Nirvana, to Jane's Addiction and Bjork, here are the artists and bands that fronted our music mags, paraded on MTV, altered our fashion choices and, importantly, turned the world on to an alternative.

For this oral history (and we LOVE an oral history) Pato conducted over 60 interviews with some of the period's greatest movers and shakers - so we get Ian MacKaye (Fugazi), Al Jourgensen (Ministry), Evan Dando (Lemonheads), Tanya Donelly (Belly/The Breeders), Mike Watt (fIREHOSE), Steve Albini (Shellac), Lori Barbero (Babes in Toyland), Paul Leary (Butthole Surfers), Frank Black (Pixies), Kristin Hersh (Throwing Muses) and many, many more (did i say Lee Ronaldo already?).

In addition, there are chapters on the artists, songs, and albums that underpin the times with commentary from those people who made and enjoyed them.

30 years ago we were getting all of our info from 120 Minutes, inky music weeklies, mixtapes from friends and bootlegs sold by dodgy geezers in Camden Market. Alternative for the Masses takes us back to those heady, glorious times where, for a short while, the freaks ruled the world.
