Andy Votel had appeared in our event space in November 2018, when he exhibited some of his library music album sleeves as part of our Sound Gallery exhibition, but this time he had the space to himself and brought with him his eerie and disquieting ‘Fakelore’ paintings and Placards.
The graphic designer, musician, DJ, producer and label owner presented ‘Transfert Suspence Hypnos’, a series of modified (or transferted) salvaged graphic surfaces - in this case re-worked found oil paintings and transformed French school placards. There were brass rubbings and a pretty terrifying wicker mask too - all making for a strangely mixed up, re-made and re-modelled Surrealistic Show which still stands out as one of our favourites.
On the evening of the launch there was a vinyl soundtrack from Jane Weaver, Sean ‘Demdike Stare’ Canty and Mr Votel himself (thanks Duke Studios for the lend of yer decks!) plus refreshments courtesy of Magic Rock Brewery.
Top night.
