We published a book!

In association with wonderful Hyde Park Picture House, we are proud and excited to reveal our first ever publication!

‘Hiding in Plain Sight’ is the first title in our brand new Colours May Vary *Editions* series. Each publication will document selected work from exhibitions that we host, artists and designers we work with, and projects we are involved in.

Why do it now? Well, inevitably pictures always get taken down, products boxed away and murals painted over. Often all that remain of events and exhibitions are memories and photos on our phones. So we thought, let’s make something, something physical, a keepsake of moments we can look back on. The last year has galvanised us too - there’s been too much digital static, not enough experiences.

Our first release features the work of talented Leeds-based illustrator Adam Allsuch Boardman.

The ‘Hiding in Plain Sight’ project, which allows people to rediscover the lost cinemas of Leeds, was conceived by the wonderful Hyde Park Picture House and features Adam’s brilliant architectural illustrations. We were delighted to be able to host the accompanying exhibition of his cinema prints that opened in our space last summer.

For many reasons, it felt like the perfect place to begin our Editions series. For starters, the people involved in this insightful interactive heritage project are a talented and industrious bunch and we’ve worked happily with them on several occasions. In addition, Adam’s exhibition also became our longest-running yet, due in part to the constraints of this peculiar year. The prints finally came down last month, but we never got bored of looking at them and they kept us company during 4 long months of closure. We instinctively knew that they’d make a fantastic book - one we’d like to own ourselves and one we’d be happy to sell to our customers.

‘Hiding in Plain Sight’ is limited to 750 hand-numbered copies and features 70 of the 83 Leeds cinemas featured on the project’s website - some now gone forever, others re-purposed, and a handful still open and entertaining the folk of Leeds. Adam has been kind enough to sign the first 50 books for us, and these will be available in the shop and on our website while stocks last.

At the back of the book you will find an index with locations to help you on your cinema spotting adventures.

We will have a small amount of the book available for wholesale purchase too so if you would like to purchase copies to sell in your shop please get in touch via hello@coloursmayvary.com All sales from our editions series help us support our bricks & mortar shop as well as the gallery space.
