This compilation of David Keenan's music writings spans a little over two decades, starting with a recounted epiphany at a Pastels gig in Glasgow in 1987. The Pastels are a good place to begin this voyage, their ramshackle, joyously amateurish, non-musicianly cacophonic beauty condemning them to a life, largely, out of the limelight. And it's within this unlit and shadowed realm that Keenan has found his people - Faust, Jandek, Coil, Einstürzende Neubauten, William Baskinski and Eugene Chadbourne - to name but a few.
Inside you'll find some of Keenan's favourite reviews, interviews, in-depth conversations, primers (on Kosmiche music, Sonic Youth, John Fahey and Noise music), and much more, all pieced together from the many (many) music publications he has written for, from the NME and Melody Maker to The Literary Review and The Wire.
The writing is, of course, fantastic, but the best thing about a book like this, it opens up music at the periphery, and sheds a little light into those dark corners
We must mention the cover art by Julian House (graphic designer and co-owner of the Ghost Box record label), which is absolutely beautiful and a suitable entry point into this enthralling collection.
