Journeys of the Soul: Vernacular Funeral Routes in Upper Calderdale | John Billingsley

Regular price £5.00

From the mediaeval period until early modern times, parishioners were required to carry their deceased to their parish church. Over time certain routes became accepted as the proper way for the soul to travel to its last resting place.

John Billingsley, co-founder of the Northern Earth Mysteries Group, has attempted to reconstruct some of these 'corpseway' routes to Heptonstall and Halifax churches and to relocate some of the traditions and folklore invested in them by our forebears.

Route descriptions enable the reader to walk them today, and look for signs of their bygone character. In doing so, you may find yourself walking with ancestral companions.
