A Collection Of Canned Food Labels Made In Japan | Seigensha

Regular price £19.50

This book contains a collection of about 550 labels on canned food for domestic consumption and export, which were printed from 1877 in the Meiji period into the Showa period. The pictures on the labels of all kinds of foodstuffs-fish. meat. shellfish. fruit. vegetables. Side dishes provide us with visible evidence of a high level of design that drew on Japan's abundant food resources at the time as well as the drive to be internationally competitive.

The freshness and originality of these distinctive designs resist being categorised as simply retro: they mirror a vigorous time in which Japan entered the modern age full of hopes for tomorrow. It is hoped that readers will en joy these canned food label designs. which still have a strong appeal today. dozens of years after they were first produced.
