Support Independent Type—the New Culture of Type Specimens | Lars Harmsen & Marian Misiak
'Typography is a spiritual geometry". If this is true (and thank you Katharina Seidl for the quote), then this new book from the Slanted stable should be a new place of worship.
'Support Independent Type is a book about the new culture of type specimens, their impact on design and typographic culture at large. It’s a manifesto for independent type foundries showcasing their work in an effort to promote freshly designed fonts, and why we should support them. An exhibit of over 400 of today’s most adventurous typography labels and designers, showcasing theirphysical and digital type specimens! The carefully selected collection gives a glimpse into the adventurous shift of this creative industry.'
This is proper nice - from the fold-out poster slipcover (glorious on Munken White) to the lay-flat binding to the myriad full-colour reproductions within - this is a celebration of the contemporary independent type scene, an outstanding reference work for anyone working in the field and pure eye candy for all those people (like us) who love books about the printed word. Oh, and if that wasn't enough there are essays by Filip Blažek and Gerry Leonidas, a Q&A section that ponders the big questions (what makes a good typeface?) and a quotes and claims section that gave us the intro to this (rather long) product description.
