SERIOUS THINGS A GO HAPPEN: THREE DECADES OF JAMAICAN DANCEHALL SIGNS

Regular price £35.00

Hat & Beard, publishers of the recent David Lynch book, put out another belter here. Serious Things A Go Happen is a celebration of the Jamaican dancehall sign and a thing of wonder and colour it is. As the intro stresses, these signs share some vocabulary with Hip Hop graffiti, but in these hand-painted notices and signs, cluttered with info, colour and clashing typography, there is something truly unique. As Marlon James states, it's an artform that feels like the sound of the genre.

This beautiful hardback book features over 100 original posters and signs which date from the early eighties to the present. In addition there are some fascinating essays and interviews throughout. Carolyn Cooper talks about the art of the dancehall sign, film/TV producer and author of this book, Maxine Walker recounts her memories to Vivien Goldman and Mikey Bennett interviews Rory Stone Love (selector of Kingston's Stone Love Movement Sound System) about his recollections of dance hall in the eighties and nineties.
