Martin Dust is one-third of the pioneering, Sheffield-based electronica act The Black Dog. He also has a background as a graphic designer and has, in more recent years, begun producing photographic work.
In 'Brutal Yorkshire' Martin has documented some of the finest examples of Northern Brutalist architecture from some of the counties' towns and cities, including, among others, Sheffield, LEEDS, Barnsley, Hull, Wakefield, Doncaster and Rotherham.
Brutal Yorkshire isn't a comprehensive overview of an architectural style, but a collection of full-bleed photographs (in both colour and black and white) that, when flipped through, create a sense of the Brutalist architectural heritage clinging on in these Northern centres - a heritage often unloved and living under the threat of the wrecking ball. We like Martin's comparison of Brutalism to Punk - a roar of the new, a ripping up of the page, a year zero that attempted to forge a brave new future.
