Avocados, tangerines, plums, apricots, hazelnuts... this incredible hardback book is stuffed full of fruit and nut varieties, all beautifully rendered in watercolour and produced as part of the US Department of Agriculture Pomological Watercolor Collection.
The 300 illustrations that form the main body of this book were assembled between 1886 and 1942 for the Division of Pomology and executed by 21 professional artists (10 women, 11 men). Each entry is annotated, providing additional information relating to the fruit/nut variety, where it was harvested, the date it was painted and the artist who painted it. Sometimes it even tells you when that particular piece of fruit was picked, or what size it was. It is a fascinating and captivating read and of interest to anyone interested in botanical illustration.
A seriously beautiful volume from Atelier Éditions, whose wealth of full-colour reproductions will make pomologists of us all.
