It's always nice when someone steps up and does the work for you, isn't it? That's what Douglas Wolk has done - he stepped up and read the entirety of Marvel's 27,000 superhero comics so you didn't have to (I mean... who has the time, aside from Quicksilver, of course). That's half a million pages, which amounts to the biggest work of fiction ever created - HE DID IT FOR YOU!
So, over 350 or so pages, Wolk plots out his guide to the Marvel Comics Universe. There are chapters that answer FAQs, such as 'Why are there so many series with nearly identical titles?', chapters that plot the timelines of Marvel's monster comic precursors, and chapters that bury down into the whole mutant/X-Men thing.
Vernacular, mythology, metaphor - it's all here - there's even an appendix that serves as a plot summary. Save yourself a few years, buy All of The Marvels and then re-watch those confusing Avengers films.
