Another beautiful book on Japanese culture from Tokyo-based Seigensha Publishing. This one explores the patterns of Katagami design.
Katagami relates to stencil designs that are used in the dyeing of komon, yukata and katayuzen kimono fabric. Inside there are 180 examples & samples from the collection of the Kyotech Company, the predecessor of which was founded in 1933 and was the largest producer of katagami in Kyoto.
There are dozens of beautiful motifs to look at, ranging from seasonal themes such as plum blossoms and dragonflies to basic patterns of stripes and arabesques. Many are shown together with ukiyo-e prints that incorporate similar designs or patterns.
