Form, Shape & Light | Flo Armitage-Hookes & Process Play
This new publication, a collaborative project between Flo Armitage-Hookes (co-lead of the Leeds chapter of the Modernist Society) and independent Yorkshire-based studio Process Play, explores and "celebrates details of architecture which are often overlooked in the daily process of living".
Here, three exemplars of Leeds modernism - The Worsley Building, Bank House and White Rose House - are examined through Flo's personal lens. Picking up on overlooked details (concrete tendrils, reflective surfaces, thin rectangular tiling), she brings the buildings into focus for us, inhabits them, and, importantly, makes you want to retrace her steps.
Each concise and reflective entry is accompanied by black and white photographs, details again, creating abstract planes of the buildings' architectural facets. There is something interesting going on here: Between the softly coloured recycled paper stock, the quiet and elegant design, and the solid materiality of the structures pictured within, we get a sense of lightness that often eludes this type of architecture. For this alone, it deserves its plaudits.
