Sex and Laughter With Kyosai: Shunga From The Israel Goldman collection

Regular price £29.95

Shunga is an erotic art form, emerging from Japan in the Edo period as part of the Ukiyo-E movement. The images in this book come from the brush and mind of Kawanabe Kyōsai, who produced an extensive body of explicit 'shunga' work in the latter half of the 19th century. Yes, there is a lot of explicit 'not for the faint-hearted' imagery here, but an awful lot of wit and humour too, as sections on 'fart battles' and 'phallus contests' would attest. The work itself, although often presenting slapstick and ridicule,  is beautifully done - presented on handscrolls, decorative screens, calendars and more.

This book offers an in-depth look at these artworks, their cultural context, and history, revealing Kyōsai’s prolific production as part of the culmination of the genre. Importantly the introduction, essays and image credits are all produced in both Japanese and English.
