Own Label: Sainsbury's Design Studio 1962-1977 (New Ed).
We rarely make lists - those top ten albums, or magazines, we change our minds far too much, but 'Own Label', that wonderful glimpse into the graphic design and packaging of the 1960s/70s Sainsbury's Design Studio, is an all time no.1 for us.
This reissue is a reason to celebrate. Once again we have the chance to own this paper archive of beautifully pared back packaging, whose surprising colour combinations and considered typography raise it to standards rarely seen today.
Undoubtedly the content has an almost irresistible nostalgic pull to anyone old enough to remember walking the aisles, picking out cereal, squash and salad cream, but this is graphic design modernism which, at the time, set daring new standards and created a visual identity which is still resonates today.
Thanks you Jonny Trunk, Fuel Publishing and Sainsbury's for republishing this design jewel which in the new iteration comes with 32 previously unpublished pages.
