Since 1978 artist Philip Ashforth Coppola has been documenting the decor of the New York Subway for his Silver Connections Encyclopedia. A compiler and archivist, Coppola took to his task when he noticed that decorative elements of the subway system were being removed - committing the designs into small spiral notebooks using an inexpensive ballpoint. This wonderful book collects together some of the best of Coppola's drawings, including maps, original sketchbook roughs and, of course, his intricate station drawings. Each is rendered exquisitely in monochrome, with annotations that reveal the colours.
Mr Coppola is now 70 years old and has committed the decoration of 110 stations to his encyclopedias - he has 59 to go. We really hope he finishes it.
