Published late into 2023, this new book, an lllustrated exploration of one of Hokusai's key motifs: Mount Fuji, is one of our books of the year.
This heavily illustrated work reproduces all of the prints from Hokusai's two best-known series of images of Japan's tallest peak: Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji and One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji. Also included are many earlier works and some later pieces, which serve to round out the artist's relationship with this iconic landmark.
This UK edition, published by Thames and Hudson, has been beautifully realised, with a lay-flat exposed spine, soft matt paper stock that carries the illustrations perfectly, and many double-page illustrations throughout. Includes an introduction by art writer, critic, and historian of Japanese culture Kyoko Wada, and an essay by curator of Japanese art Frank Feltens.
