Regular price £17.50

Subtitled 'An emotional map of Brexit Britain', this new title from Roberts and Wright's Graphicdesign& imprint takes a reflective look back at the UK's decision to leave the EU.

The book was born of frustration stemming from the divisive rhetoric and polarising discourse which highlighted the referendum in 2016. Here, 50 individuals from different areas of the country, talk about their thoughts on the referendum, and the gains and losses they feel underpin the result. In accordance with the referendum split, 26 voices come from those who voted leave and 24 from those who voted to remain. The resulting text, from people of different occupations, ages and backgrounds, highlights the huge range and depth of emotion felt by all participants. One common theme revolved around failures of communication. This book has been designed to 'foreground the role of communication in Britain's relationship with Europe.

The title is double-ended, reading both ways, the red cover documenting the thoughts of leavers, the blue those of remainers (with the spine a lovely coming together of the two). Throughout, the areas represented are visualised by the use of a set of visually neutral sans serif typefaces. Neutrality is key here - it can be flipped and read either way, and no typefaces vies for competition over another. A balance, which was never achieved during the election, finds form here.

In addition, there are fascinating texts by type designer Nadine Chahine, communication expert Ian Leslie and graphic designer Paul McNeil.
