There Will Be No Quiet - Stanley Donwood -SIGNED EDITION!
"It is not at all easy to become an artist and it's not something i'd advise, even though from a distance it looks like a fairly relaxed course of action." So begins the preface to this beautiful monograph of work from Stanley Donwood, who thankfully persevered to become the highly regarded and influential image maker we know today, especially through his work for the band Radiohead and their vocalist Thom Yorke.
Working with the band since 1994, this book presents us with Donwood's sketchbook pages, photographs, paintings, digital work, woodcuts and drawings which all coalesce to form a unique and personal view of the artist and his relationship with the band. Each major work is addressed and presented as a walkthrough of ideas and iterations, revisions and processes - creating a fascinating never before seen archive of material. There is plenty to read too, with some excellent essays from Donwood peppered throughout the body of the book shedding more light on work he's done outside that of the band's gravitational pull as well as within it.
This is a really lovely casebound hardback, with changes in paper stock (matte for the essays and glossy for the imagery), a debossed cover and a real eye for design throughout.
Donwood signs off by saying "I have failed in art more often than i've succeeded, and most often nothing has gone as planned.". May there be many more failures and left turns to come.
