Soviet Cities | Arseniy Kotov

Regular price £24.95

This new book from Fuel documents Soviet modernist architecture across the former USSR. In recent years, due to a sustained period of change, many modernist buildings have been destroyed, while others have fallen foul of insensitive renovations.

Russian photographer Arseniy Kotov intends to document these buildings and their surroundings before they are lost forever. Preferring to shoot during winter months, in the 'blue hour', Kotov's images capture a contrast between the warmth of the apartment block interiors and the descending gloom of twilight.

His images are nostalgic and idealised, their atmosphere reflecting the Soviet world of the photographer's imagination. The resulting images, often taken from rooftops and high vantage points, are eerily beautiful, chilly and still, largely devoid of people and dusted with snow. Beautiful.
