A mudlark is, according to the Cambridge Dictionary, 'Someone who searches the mud near rivers trying to find valuable or interesting objects'. Author, Lara Maiklem, has been searching the banks of the River Thames for almost 20 years, pursuing the objects that the great river has unearthed - these include medieval buckles, Roman hairpins, Tudor buttons, Victorian toys and 20th Century metal type (the Doves Type story is fascinating).
It has proved an activity far richer and more important than a personal search for treasure, it reveals the story of a city, its people and their lost way of life.
