Cimarron: Freedom and Masquerade by Charles Freger

Regular price £28.00

Cimarron (a Spanish-American term for fugitive former slaves) finds photographer Charles Freger exploring the costumes, characters and masks created by the descendants of Africans and indigenous peoples in the Americas.  In these images, taken in Peru, Columbia, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala and even the USA itself, people honour their African ancestry and celebrate their heritage by staging elaborate masquerades and by creating costume influenced by African tribal dress, wild ritual regalia and shimmering Mardi Gras outfits.

These fantastical, otherworldly and grotesque creations are beautifully captured by Freger, recording real people whose collective sense of memory, folk history and imagination dramatically challenges our expectations.
