The Art of Clay Pipe Music - Prints and Graphics by Frances Castle

We're very excited to be be bringing you, for our July show, an exhibition of works by talented illustrator, musician and record label founder Frances Castle. Frances' work has been familiar to us for quite some time, as we own several of her beautifully designed and illustrated LPs which have been put out through her Clay Pipe imprint.

Plinth - Music for Smalls Lighthouse

Over the course of 8 years, Clay Pipe has put out some wonderfully original music by the likes of Darren Hayman, Alasdair Roberts, Jon Brooks, Vic Mars and James Green, whose 'Donkey Monoliths' current grace our walls. Like any truly great label, Clay Pipe has a distinct feel, a thread that seems to join the releases together into a tapestry, each helped to fit into place through Frances' evocative sleeve artwork. Often described as folkloric, pastoral, spectral and hauntological - the music and accompanying sleeves take us on bucolic journeys - on Greenline buses, through leafy villages, to community swimming pools and beyond.

The Hardy Tree - Through Passages of Time

'The Art of Clay Pipe Music', which runs from July 5th to August 1st, will feature prints of several of those amazing Clay Pipe album covers (as well as some of the records themselves) and some examples of her other illustrative work - Frances recently self-published her first graphic novel 'Stagdale' and illustrated a book of British folktales titled 'Between Worlds' published by Walker Books. We are absolutely thrilled to have Frances's work in our space and we guarantee that a visit will be well worth your time , whether you're an audiophile, a fan of book illustration or a graphic novel nutcase.

Vic Mars - The Land and the Garden

The launch is on Friday 5th from 6-9 so come down, meet Frances, listen to some stellar sounds and look at some amazing artwork. (more details to follow on social media!)
